May 29, 2002--Corning Inc. and Fibre Optic Cable and Accessories Ltd. (FOCAL), a Vietnam fiber-optic cable manufacturer, announced today that Vietnam Telecoms National Co. (VTN) will deploy Corning LEAF optical fiber in its Ho Chi Minh Highway project.

Corning Inc. and Fibre Optic Cable and Accessories Ltd. (FOCAL), a Vietnam fiber-optic cable manufacturer, announced today that Vietnam Telecoms National Co. (VTN) will deploy Corning LEAF optical fiber in its Ho Chi Minh Highway project. This will be the first installation of LEAF fiber or any non-zero dispersion-shifted fiber (NZ-DSF) in Vietnam.

LEAF fiber, as well as Corning SMF-28 fiber, will be installed in a hybrid network along the first 430 kilometers of the Ho Chi Minh Highway, a major infrastructure project in Vietnam, which will span Hoa Lac-Hatay to Ho Chi Minh City when complete. Shipment will begin in the second quarter of 2002. FOCAL, an equity company between Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Corporation (VNPT) and Corning Cable Systems, is the cable supplier selected for this project.

"By choosing Corning optical fiber, VTN has demonstrated a strong commitment to developing a high-technology telecommunications infrastructure in Vietnam," contends Michael Parry-Jones, manager, Marketing and Commercial Operations Asia Pacific, Corning Incorporated. "We are pleased to have this opportunity to work with FOCAL in this region and further expand the worldwide deployment of LEAF fiber."

Michael Osswald, general director, FOCAL, adds, "Corning's LEAF fiber is recognized worldwide for the continuous innovation and cost advantages it offers today's networks. We are delighted to be selected as the cabler for the Ho Chi Minh Highway infrastructure project, marking the first installation of technologically advanced fiber in Vietnam."

LEAF fiber has a large effective area to allow higher levels of power to be transmitted through the fiber than standard NZ-DSFs, minimizing the non-linear effects that degrade system performance. SMF-28 fiber offers high performance in 1310 and 1550 nm applications and excellent splicing and handling capability.
