February 10, 2003--Union Springs Telephone Co. is working with fiber-to-the-home provider Optical Solutions Inc. (Minneapolis, MN) to deploy a FiberPath 400 fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) system in Union Springs, AL.

Union Springs Telephone Co. is working with fiber-to-the-home provider Optical Solutions Inc. (Minneapolis, MN) to deploy a FiberPath 400 fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) system in Union Springs, AL. Union Springs Telephone is a subsidiary of ROPIR Industries, Inc., located about 36 miles southeast of Montgomery.

The new network will deliver ultra high-speed data, voice, and video services to over 1700 residents and businesses in the historic city of Union Springs, which was incorporated in 1844. It is the first FTTH deployment in the state of Alabama and the greater Southeast area of the United States.

"Our goal has always been to provide our customers with the latest in communications technology at affordable rates," says Billie Pirnie, president and owner of Union Springs Telephone. "We are able to continue to meet our goal with the new fiber-to-the-home equipment."

Union Springs Telephone has always been deeply committed to improving the quality of life for its citizens, and the new FTTH system is providing Union Springs' residents with advanced broadband services available today in much larger cities. Union Springs' vision is that this new FTTH network will be an integral part of promoting economic development, attracting new businesses, and enabling new community services in the area.

Union Springs Telephone first deployed the Optical Solutions FiberPath 400 system back in November 2001, when the company's fourth-generation FTTH system was first available to the marketplace. Now Union Springs Telephone is wrapping up the first phase of its FiberPath 400 deployment, with the second phase slated to begin in the next 60 days. There are now more than 750 homes and businesses up and running, and over 1000 more planned subscribers for phase two of the deployment.

Optical Solutions' FiberPath 400 FTTH system uses passive optical network architecture to deliver converged voice, video and data services from a central office to a customer premise. Once service is initiated, each customer receives data service at extraordinary speeds, multiple phone lines, and hundreds of analog and/or digital cable television channels. All services are provided on a single, integrated bill to subscribers.
