Nortel Networks (NYSE:NT)(TSE:NT.) has strengthened its position in the high-performance Optical Internet, capturing 48.1 percent of the overall global market for optical transport equipment in the fourth quarter of 2000, according to the latest figures from the Dell'Oro Group, a market research firm.
Dell'Oro ranked Nortel Networks No. 1 "across the board" for the fourth quarter in DWDM-Long Haul (60.4 percent), DWDM-Metro (54.8 percent) and SONET/SDH (41.1 percent) as well as overall. This included a 7.6 percent increase in DWDM-Long Haul and a 4.9 percent increase overall from the third quarter of 2000. For the year, Nortel Networks captured a 42.9 percent share of the overall global optical transport market, an increase of nearly 13 percent over 1999.
Greg Mumford, president, Optical Internet, Nortel Networks attributes Nortel's success to customer focus and continuous development to ensure low cost.
