Infonetics: Optical network hardware up 21% year-over-year in Q2
The global optical network equipment market, including WDM and SONET/SDH equipment, jumped 13% in 2Q11, following an 11% decrease in 1Q11, says market research firm Infonetics Research. That equates to a 21% year-on-year increase, Infonetics reports in its newly released second quarter 2011 (2Q11) Optical Network Hardware vendor market share report.
Infonetics reports that optical equipment spending improved year-over-year in all regions and rolling 12-month trends remain positive.
"Our expectations for single-digit market growth this year remain in reach. If global optical network equipment spending in the second half of 2011 is flat with the first half, total spending for 2011 will be up 6.5%," offers Andrew Schmitt, Infonetics Research's directing analyst for optical. "The strength of the optical market in the EMEA region needs to be qualified: 5% of the gains are due to currency effects, and all of the growth came from ZTE and Huawei."
Infonetics says WDM optical network equipment spending increased 37% from the same quarter in 2010. Meanwhile, ROADM equipment spending set another new high in 2Q11, rising 9% sequentially. In fact, for the first 6 months of 2011, ROADM equipment shipments are up 55% over the comparable period in 2010.
From the suppliers perspective, ZTE and Huawei showed what Infonetics termed “very strong results” in both Asia Pacific and EMEA. In fact, removing the contribution of these vendors to EMEA sales would result in a sequential decline in the region. On the other side of the Atlantic, the North America market showed modest quarter-over-quarter gains, with Fujitsu and Tellabs benefitting the most.
Second quarter sales in Japan also improved over the year-ago quarter.
Infonetics' quarterly Optical Network Hardware report tracks metro and long-haul optical network equipment, including SONET/SDH, WDM, and packet-optical transport systems. Figures include number of ports and revenue per port by speed as well as sales by region and by supplier.
