MARCH 11, 2010 -- The Cable and Telecommunications Human Resources Association (CTHRA) reports that while 30 percent of employers in the United States froze salaries in 2009 and 14 percent projected salary freezes this year, none of the nine cable and satellite MSOs surveyed by CTHRA in November 2009 implemented salary freezes in 2009 or planned them for 2010.
Of the 19 programmers and broadcast networks surveyed, only 11 percent reported frozen merit increase budgets for 2009 (down from 18 percent reported in CTHRA’s July 2009 Survey) and 14 percent projected salary freezes in 2010. The year-end survey, an adjunct to CTHRA’s Annual Compensation Survey completed in July 2009, was conducted by The Croner Company, a leading compensation survey firm.
“There is no denying that salary freezes are sometimes inevitable. Many industries have to face the fact that their value proposition and operating model have bumps. However, results from CTHRA’s latest compensation survey show that retaining talent remains a high priority for the cable and satellite business, even during a recession,” says Pamela Williams, CAE, CTHRA’s executive director.
CTHRA’s survey found that industry employers planning merit increases budgeted approximately 3 percent for 2010, which is better than the general-industry projection of 2.7 percent.
CTHRA is currently seeking participants for its 2010 Annual Compensation Survey.
Figures are quoted from Mercer’s 2009/2010 US Compensation Planning Survey Update.
