Lumen adds Nationwide Insurance CTO Jim Fowler to its board

Aug. 8, 2023
The service provider said the appointment fortifies its telecom disruptor stance.

Lumen Technologies has added Jim Fowler, the EVP, and CTO of Nationwide Insurance, to its board of directors, bringing the company's board count from 10 to 11.

The company said he is a good fit for its board because Fowler advocates innovation and digital transformation with over 25 years of experience in technology leadership roles for Fortune 100 companies.

In his current role at Nationwide Insurance, Fowler is leading a team responsible for modernizing core technology capabilities, digitally transforming business capabilities, and automating operations.

Kate Johnson, president and CEO of Lumen, said the timing of Fowler’s appointment to the board comes on the heels of the provider’s recent introduction of its Network as a Service (NaaS) platform.

"On top of being a skilled technologist, Jim is an accomplished transformation leader with a passion for winning," Johnson said. "His excitement and perspective are precious, especially as we start to disrupt the telecommunications industry with the launch of our Network-as-a-service platform.

Fowler has had a long career working in the data networking industry. Before coming to Nationwide Insurance, he spent 18 years at General Electric (GE) as the Global Chief Information Officer. Earlier, he held Chief Information Officer roles for GE Capital, GE Power and Water, GE Intelligent Platforms, and GE Aviation, amongst other functions. While at GE, he delivered digital transformation across the enterprise. Jim sees himself as a catalyst, enabler, and futurist ready to challenge business models with technology.

"It's the people at Lumen who are driving transformation," said Fowler. "Kate has built an incredibly talented team—the opportunity ahead of us is tremendous.”
