Qwest Communications International Inc. (Denver, CO) and lci International Inc. (McLean, VA) have announced a merger agreement worth $4.4 billion. The combined companies will compose the fourth-largest U.S. long-distance company, according to the firms. The two companies had total revenues of $2.3 billion in 1997 and have a current equity market capitalization of more than $11 billion. Qwest`s planned 16,285-mi fiber-optic network is now under construction, while lci has an 8500-mi fiber network under way.
