NEC launches new deep-fiber offering

OCTOBER 10, 2007 -- NEC Corp. has launched two new additions to its AM3100 Series Multi-Service Access Node (MSAN) product range, the AM3110 and AM3160.

OCTOBER 10, 2007 -- NEC Corp. (search for NEC) has launched two new additions to its AM3100 Series Multi-Service Access Node (MSAN) product range, the AM3110 and AM3160.

The AM3110 and AM3160 are designed to enable deep fiber deployment with lower incremental cost. One common platform for next-generation services delivers lower opex through common spares, inventory, and maintenance practices, NEC says. Small form factor and card flexibility mean better matches for capex to service growth, the company adds.

According to Richard Hanscott, vice president, network solutions at NEC Europe, the design and implementation of next-generation network technology is one of the most pressing issues facing telecommunications businesses today.

"As we enter the third wave of broadband development, flexibility is the key. Continued cost pressure on operators and higher subscriber bandwidths drive deeper fiber penetration. In order to survive, operators will need to reinvent themselves and their revenue structures in order to address industry challenges and meet the increasing demands of their customers," said Hanscott.

The AM3110 is designed for high-density central office and large street cabinet deployments and delivers 280-Gbit/sec backplane capacity, 10-Gbit/sec capacity per slot, and service flexibility supporting multiple services. The AM3160 is for space-limited street cabinets and remote building equipment rooms; NEC says it is "unique" in terms of its size, shape, and dimensions, enabling new deployment scenarios and niche services catering for tens to hundreds of subscribers.

"The scalability of the AM3100 series means greater throughput capacities for High Definition IPTV support and lower total cost of ownership -- with extended platform life as densities and capacities evolve. This allows incremental migration to NextGen access services such as 10G-based PON services," said Hanscott.

Added Hanscott, "NEC has built a total access platform family that meets all copper, fiber, and wireless applications requirements.

NEC says the AM3110's features include:


  • Scalable and cost-efficient MSAN: POTS, VDSL2, GPON, PDH, FE, and GE service interfaces
  • Backplane capacity delivering 10 Gbits/sec bi-directionally to each slot
  • Incorporates NEC's latest GPON optics and chipset technology
  • Industry-standard PICMG ATCA architecture ensures faster, more cost-effective development which directly benefits operators and their customers.
Meanwhile, the AM3160 features:

  • Ultra-compact purpose built for remote deployment in a hostile environment
  • VDSL2, POTS, SHDSL, PDH, FE, and GE service interfaces
  • GE and GPON uplink interfaces
  • MicroTCA-based architecture ensures faster more cost-effective development which directly benefits operators and their customers.
