ElectroniCast: Private data networks drive connector/splice sales

DECEMBER 16, 2008 -- ElectroniCast Consultants (search for ElectroniCast), in the update release of their market forecasts and analysis of the global market consumption and technology trends of fiber-optic connectors and mechanical splices, says that the fiber-optic connector consumption value will be led by private data networks.According to the report, such applications (apparatus plus OEM) represented in 2007 a 45 percent share ($631 million). This space is expected to grow slightly to 47.5 percent share or $1.2 billion by 2012."Due to the multi-industry worldwide economic crisis, the forecast is relatively flat for 2009 in some markets, said Stephen Montgomery, president of ElectroniCast Consultants � APAC and the director of the study program. "Use of very short internal optical interconnect (<10 meters) will eventually be one of the main drivers for the market expansion in specialty applications. Consumption increase in private data networks, military applications, and an eventual pick-up in value mainly driven by telecommunication access fiber deployments will be seen during the forecast period," Montgomery said.The worldwide cross-industry economic crisis of 2008 will slow the consumption of fiber-optic connectors, especially through the end of 2009. However, the North American connector consumption will be driven by the proliferation of relatively shorter links used in private data and local loop networks. European fiber-optic connector relative market share is led by the European Union member-states as they transition to open competition in delivery of broadband services to business, as well as residential customers.The fastest growth in connector consumption will occur in Japan/Pacific. Rest of the World (including the Middle East, South/Central America, Africa and Australia) consumption will be stimulated by favorable national economic policies and the trend toward telecom liberalization.
