28 APRIL 2009 -- 3S Photonics (search Lightwave for 3S Photonics), a French manufacturer of laser chips, optical discrete modules, and passive components for telecom networks, has introduced a product line of fibre-based dispersion compensation modules (DCF-DCMs) to provide its customers with chromatic dispersion compensation capabilities.

Modules from the product line provide a means to overcome the impairment of chromatic dispersion experienced by signals traveling along singlemode fibres. Based on negative dispersion slope-compensating fibre technology, they allow a continuous compensation over a wide spectral band. The modules provide a solution to chromatic dispersion issues encountered in high-bit-rate, long-distance, wideband DWDM and cable TV optical networks.

"The introduction of these DCF-based DCMs within the 3S Photonics product portfolio is the result of a partnership agreement which allows us to enter the promising chromatic dispersion compensation market in both Europe and Asia," explains Michel Privat, chief operating officer and vice president of sales at 3S Photonics.

The new product line consists of three product families covering three types of dispersion slope compensation adapted to ITU-T G.652, G.653, and G.655 fibre characteristics:

  • 2002 DCM - Singlemode optical fibre (SMF - G.652)
  • 2003 DCM - Dispersion-shifted singlemode fibre (DSF - G.653)
  • 2005 DCM - Non-zero dispersion-shifted fibre (NZ-DSF - G.655)

Key features include operating temperature range -5°C to +70°C; wideband dispersion slope compensation (C-band, L-band); low loss; low polarization-dependent loss; high figure-of-merit); and multiple adapter or connectorised pigtail configurations.

Modules are proposed for compensation in the C-band, L-band, or the C+L band where applicable.

Products have undergone a dedicated qualification program. Customised models are available upon request.
