MARCH 22, 2007 -- Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. (search for Oki) has launched the KGL5115KD, a 10-Gbit/sec electro-absorption modulator integrated laser diode (EML) driver IC for optical communication applications. The new IC has one of the world's smallest footprints and achieves the world's lowest power consumption at 0.45 W (at 2.3-Vpp amplitude), Oki asserts. Samples of these products are available starting today.
"We are pleased to bring to market the KGL5115KD with significantly reduced power consumption compared to our former models that had already attained the world's lowest power consumption level. Our customers can now achieve 10-Gbit/sec pluggable modules with a high-quality wave pattern, smaller size, and lower power consumption, which will be ideal for XFP and SFP+ applications," said Masayuki Tsuboi, president of the Optical Components Company at Oki Electric Industry. "With this product we aim to achieve over 50% market share in the 10-Gbit/sec optical modulator driver IC market."
The KGL5115KD operates on a power supply of 3.3 V. While maintaining the wave pattern characteristics of OKI's driver ICs using GaAs PHEMT, OKI succeeded in reducing power consumption by 25% compared to conventional models. It uses a 4x4-mm ceramic package.
Tsuboi continued, "We will continue to leverage our strengths in high-speed, high voltage processing devices, and from the fiscal year ending March 2009, we plan to achieve sales revenue of 1 billion yen with EML driver ICs including this product in the 10-Gbit/sec optical communication market."
