Nortel Networks (Brampton, ON, Canada) announced that Florida Power & Light Co. (FPL--Miami, FL) signed an agreement to purchase more than $6 million worth of local access network equipment from its Bay Networks line of business. Nortel acquired Bay Networks to gain a presence in the data-communications market. FPL, Nortel`s largest utility customer in the United States, operates one of Florida`s largest fiber-optic networks, in excess of 1500 mi. FPL plans to install additional Passport products from Nortel and three Bay products: the BayStack 450 stackable 10/100/1000 Ethernet switch, the Accelar 1200 routing switch, and Optivity enterprise network management.
