NEC America Inc. (Melville, NY) has announced it is spinning out its Access Products Div. into an independent corporation. The new company, called NEC Eluminant Technologies, Inc. (Herndon, VA), will market NEC`s asynchronous multiplexers, digital loop carrier systems, and SONET multiplexers. It will also develop and market new equipment for the access market. These products will take advantage of the work NEC has done in Japan on passive optical network equipment, according to Curtis Benton, president and chief executive of the new company (which will also do business under the name eluminant) and Jim Holley, vice president of marketing. However, the company`s first new product will be a SONET add/drop multiplexer that will debut in the first quarter of this year. Benton anticipates that NEC will create other new companies in existing market areas to drive innovation and entrepreneurship.
