Qwest Communications International Inc. (Denver, CO) has activated a fiber-optic link of approximately 1100 mi from Phoenix, AZ, to Austin, TX. The company also made two acquisitions. The first was the completion of a previously announced acquisition of Phoenix Network Inc. (Golden, CO), a non-facilities-based reseller of long-distance services. The second acquisition, of EUnet International (Amsterdam, the Netherlands), will put the company in the European data market. The transaction is valued at $154 million. EUnet provides Internet service in 13 European countries. Finally, the company also announced deals with Verio Inc. ($100 million for capacity on the Qwest network) and SunGard Recovery Services Inc. ($10 million for broadband data services), as well as four dark-fiber sales agreements worth $25 million with two major long-distance communications providers and an energy company. The names of these last companies were not revealed.
