Ericsson to supply Telefónica's metro broadband network in Spain
May 10, 2006 Stockholm -- Telefónica de España has selected Ericsson as supplier for its metro DWDM optical network. Under terms of an agreement, Ericsson will deploy its multi-haul WDM platform to enhance the capacity of Telefónica's metropolitan transport network in Spain. Telefónica says the platform will be the cornerstone its network in that country.
"We have chosen Ericsson as the supplier of this technology due to its outstanding flexibility, optimal performance, and operational synergies," says Enrique Carrascal, network director of Telefónica de España.
Telefónica says the network will allow it to meet the increasing traffic demands generated by consumer response to its broadband services offering. Via Ericsson's modular WDM platform, the operator says it will deliver high-speed data, storage, video, and voice services with outstanding bandwidth utilization and quality of service.
Telefónica also says the contract highlights the benefits of its recent acquisition of Marconi.
"This contract represents a major milestone in Ericsson, positioning into the new transport network of Telefónica and our consolidation, after the acquisition of Marconi, as wireline suppliers," comments Ingemar Naeve, president of Ericsson Iberia.
