Axcess Ontario has signed an agreement to sell its open-access fiber-optic network ring to nearby New York state telecommunications service provider Empire Access, enabling the latter company to extend its service availability to surrounding communities in the coming months. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

A more than 200-mile open-access fiber network in Ontario County, NY, the Axcess Ontario fiber ring delivers enhanced connectivity for telecommunications carriers and business-to-business companies. Based in the Finger Lakes region of New York, Empire Access provides residential and business fiber-optic services in the village of Naples, and a wide range of fiber business services in the city of Canandaigua through the Axcess Ontario network.

According to Axcess Ontario, the fiber-optic network will allow Empire Access to provide fiber optic high-speed internet, digital TV, phone and security systems to residential and business customers.

"Axcess Ontario's existing network offers us a great foundation to build out from," said Jim Baase, Empire Access COO. "By combining our networks, we can offer fiber services to substantially more homes and businesses within Ontario County. This is a great opportunity for both of our organizations and also the residents of Ontario County."

With headquarters in Canandaigua, NY, Axcess Ontario built the open-access fiber-optic network in 2005, and has managed the infrastructure in Ontario County since then. The fiber ring has been recognized as a broadband access model on a national level, says Axcess Ontario.
