Ciena to acquire OSS firm DonRiver for Blue Planet extension
Ciena Corp. (NYSE: CIEN) says it has agreed to acquire DonRiver. The purchase of the privately held operational support systems (OSS) company will expand the capabilities of the Blue Planet software-defined networking (SDN) platform into the IT OSS realm, Ciena expects. Terms of the deal, which is expected to close in Ciena’s fiscal fourth quarter 2018 (which ends this October), were not disclosed.
DonRiver’s portfolio includes federated network and service inventory management software. The new assets will enable Ciena to stretch Blue Planet beyond network orchestration and control and provide a unified inventory view of network elements, the company believes. “The combination of Blue Planet and DonRiver will enhance our ability to deliver closed loop automation of network services and the underlying operational processes across IT/operations and the network,” explained Rick Hamilton, senior vice president of Global Software and Services at Ciena. “With this new set of technology and expertise, we can help customers realize the full benefits of network automation by helping them move away from highly complex and fragmented OSS environments to those that accurately reflect the real-time state and utilization of network resources.”
Meanwhile, the DonRiver team also includes integration and consulting staff that should expand Ciena’s specialized services capabilities as well.
