ETT, Ciena deploy first commercial 100G network in Eastern Europe

Ciena Corp. (NASDAQ: CIEN) has notched up yet another coherent 100G win this week, this time with the Ukrainian telecoms operator Eurotranstelecom (ETT). The vendor says this is the first commercial deployment of 100G in Eastern Europe.

ETT will use Ciena’s 6500 packet-optical transport platform equipped with WaveLogic coherent optical processors to upgrade its backbone network to meet the growing connectivity requirements of the region and support international traffic. The operator's 6,000-km core network covers the country’s main urban areas and is integrated with networks in Russia, Poland, Hungary, and Slovakia.

A long-standing partner of Ciena, ETT is upgrading a link on its existing DWDM network to 100 Gbps. The 100 Gbps link is 560-km long and connects the capital, Kiev, to Kharkov in the northeast of the country.

In future, ETT plans to extend its 100-Gbps network to major Ukrainian regional centers such as Lvov, Donetsk, Odessa, and Dnepropetrovsk, providing high-speed support for in-transit traffic from European, Ukrainian, and Russian operators.

Ciena says that its coherent technology provides ETT with a smooth and rapid transition to 100G – without the need for a network redesign. The architecture allows ETT to run 10-, 40-, and 100-Gbps wavelengths simultaneously, and upgrade to higher capacities as requirements change, while also reducing overall operational costs.

According to Alexandr Prokopenko, CTO at ETT, "This technology will allow our clients to get high-speed links to key international and national markets. Ciena’s coherent solution provides ETT with a smooth network upgrade without the need for a redesign of the existing infrastructure, offering a reliable, scalable and cost-efficient foundation for our network."
