Deutsche Telekom Global Carrier uses Ciena’s 800-Gbps technology for data center interconnect in Austria

Pan-European wholesale network operator Deutsche Telekom Global Carrier has turned up an 800-Gbps data center interconnect link between Austrian data centers. The links use 800-Gbps technology from with Ciena (NYSE: CIEN).

The data center interconnect links, between data centers in Vienna, leverages Ciena’s WaveLogic 5 Extreme (WL5e) coherent transmission engine. The communications technology vendor states that Deutsche Telekom Global Carrier will field the WL5e within the Ciena 6500 and Waveserver 5 platforms. Use of the optical transport systems with the WL5e will enable the network operator to transport eight 100G data traffic streams in less than 100 GHz of spectrum. The systems are optimized for 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) and 400GbE customer interface connectivity. The WL5e-enabled systems can transport 2x400GbE across a single 800G wavelength. Ciena foresees the systems being deployed in Public Telehouse Exchange points.

“We pride ourselves on always being a step ahead and this move will push us over the threshold,” commented Rolf Nafziger, senior vice president at Deutsche Telekom Global Carrier, the international wholesale division of Deutsche Telekom. “It will help us achieve a significant industry milestone by delivering the first 800G network in Europe. With it, we will increase network capacity and efficiency, and create a more adaptive network that can meet our customer’s needs now and into the future.”

This European 800G deployment follows announcements that Verizon and Southern Cross plan similar roll outs this year (see Verizon runs 800 Gbps with Ciena, Juniper Networks and "Southern Cross connects data center with 800G wavelength via Ciena WaveLogic 5 coherent transmission technology).
