The technology vendor will supply linecards bearing the company’s WaveLogic 5 Extreme coherent engine for the task.

Ciena (NYSE: CIEN) says it will enable NTT Communications Corp. to support single-wavelength 800G transport for data center interconnect (DCI) applications. The technology vendor will supply linecards bearing the company’s WaveLogic 5 Extreme coherent engine for the task.

When paired with DWDM, the upgraded DCI infrastructure will support up to 33.6 Tbps between data centers in metro areas. Ciena says NTT Com will be able to scale capacity as demands require.

“Since its inception, NTT Com has continued to take on the challenges of the Internet, delivering value in terms of convenience, efficiency, and security through connectivity. By upgrading to a high-quality, reliable 800G ultra high-capacity DCI network, we aim to enable our customers to achieve an even more dynamic digital experience and robust business results," commented Junichi Iimuro, vice president of the Infrastructure Design Department, Platform Services Division, within NTT Com.

Ciena notes that, earlier this year, it joined the Innovative Optical and Wireless Network Global Forum (IOWN GF) co-founded by NTT, Intel, and Sony Corp. to define the next-generation communications infrastructure in Japan (see “NTT, Intel, Sony found Innovative Optical and Wireless Network Global Forum”).
