JUNE 23, 2008 -- Cable customers like WOW! Internet, Cable and Phone--the 11th largest cable MSO in the U.S.--are turning to GPON for the delivery of business services.

JUNE 23, 2008 -- Calix (search for Calix) today announced that over 150 service providers are now using its GPON (search for GPON) FTTP systems for the delivery of business services. The most recent addition to the Calix FTTP customer family--WOW! Internet, Cable and Phone, the 11th largest cable MSO in the U.S.--adds to the more than 300 service provider customers in North America who have now deployed Calix FTTP offerings, say company representatives.

Calix reports a dramatic increase in the number of service providers utilizing GPON's ability to deliver both IP-over-Ethernet and TDM-based services. GPON offers service providers a low cost technology for delivering an array of high-value business services, including basic voice services, T1 high caps, high-speed Ethernet (10/100/1000 Mbits/sec), transparent LAN services, and RF video, thereby allowing service providers to generate revenues from legacy services as well as emerging services, claims the company. In addition, GPON operates at 2.5 Gbits/sec in the downstream and 1.2 Gbit/sec in the upstream, providing enormous bandwidth capacity and flexibility in delivering high-speed services, with over two times the bandwidth of IEEE passive optical networking (EPON) technologies, says Calix.

This combination of low cost, service flexibility, and capacity has contributed to a sevenfold year-over-year increase worldwide in GPON ports shipments in the first quarter of 2008, according to the Dell'Oro Group, and increased interest from many different segments of the market.

"Over the past few years we have been very successful in offering innovative, reliable business services via FTTP in Evansville, IN, and in other Midwestern markets," reports Ron Mattingly, engineering manager at WOW! Internet, Cable and Phone. "Calix GPON represents a unique opportunity for WOW! to better serve our communities with more bandwidth, increased flexibility and lower operational expenses," he contends. WOW! Business Solutions services small and medium sized businesses in Evansville and other WOW! markets in Illinois, Michigan, and Ohio.

"With the addition of WOW!, Calix continues to show that its GPON solutions, specifically its GPON business solutions, are finding acceptance among a wide variety of service providers," adds David Russell, solutions marketing director at Calix. "We see business services over GPON as a natural fit for cable operators as there is no technology in the market today that can generate higher service revenues for the level of invested capital as GPON."

At the SCTE Cable-TEC Expo, which takes place June 24-27 in Philadelphia, Calix (Booth #1502) will be exhibiting a range of GPON products for delivering both residential and business services.
