NOVEMBER 11, 2009 -- Etisalat, the leading integrated service provider in the Middle East, has selected Zhone's new MXK intelligent terabit access concentrator for its FTTX network expansion.

Side by side with equipment provided by two other suppliers, Etisalat will deploy Zhone's MXK intelligent terabit access concentrator with zNID optical network terminals (ONTs) to business and residential customers in a major network expansion throughout the United Arab Emirates. Etisalat's plans include GPON installations to provide broadband and a full lineup of consumer voice and enhanced video services to its residential subscribers. The company will also use GPON on the MXK platform to provide services including advanced call processing and ultrahigh-speed data to businesses throughout the region.

"Zhone's FTTX solution gives us unprecedented scaleable bandwidth, robust network control, and the ability to serve more customers with greater efficiency," says Saleem Al Marzooqi, senior vice president/network development for Etisalat. "Our rigorous and extensive side-by-side lab trials proved the MXK's superior performance -- and its well-designed architecture makes it among the top futureproof platforms on the market."

Etisalat's advanced services, delivered over a large GPON deployment, place stringent demands on traffic management and security resources such as GEMs, VLANs, and priority tags. Beyond bandwidth, Zhone's MXK platforms demonstrated in rigorous Etisalat testing the service intelligence needed to maintain the robust network control and security they require, says the company.

"The MXK platform with our proven SLMS access operating system software and complementary zNID ONTs are designed specifically for all-IP networks and intelligent traffic management of massive amounts of bandwidth," says Mike Scheck, vice president of international sales for Zhone Technologies. "Etisalat's network is a model application of the new benchmark we're setting for scaleable, manageable, and service-rich networks, and we're honored that our solution was selected."
