OCTOBER 8, 2009 -- Alphion Corp. announced today that Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), the largest government telecommunication service provider in India, has selected Alphion GPON technology for the deployment of next-generation multiple play FTTX services in the western and southern zones of India. The initial BSNL contract for the Alphion GPON equipment, the first phase in a multiyear program, will provide services to 259,000 fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) subscribers.
The Alphion GPON product family consists of state-of-the-art optical line terminals (OLTs), optical network terminals (ONTs), and passive optical splitters. The OLT offers 40 protectable GPON ports per shelf, an ultrafast redundant 200-Gbps backplane, and 56-Gbps uplink capacity. The solution supports PON architectures with path and equipment redundancy and includes ONTs for single-family residences, small businesses, and multiple-dwelling units. Alphion is showing its full line of GPON equipment at the ITU Telecom World 2009 exhibition (booth 5175), Oct. 5-9, in Geneva, Switzerland.
"The selection of Alphion technology for a major share of the GPON network equipment being procured by BSNL, is a significant achievement and establishes Alphion as a leading supplier of GPON access solutions in the Indian Telecom Networks," comments Bharat P. Dave, Alphion chairman, president, and CEO. "Alphion is fully committed to supporting the roll-out of GPON equipment in India. This initial contract is the first phase of BSNL's planned multiyear deployment of GPON networks and our deliveries of Alphion equipment, the first GPON shipments in India, are well underway."
