FEBRUARY 12, 2009 -- As part of the project, Lattelecom will first launch commercial services in the capital city of Riga, where customers will enjoy access speeds of 100 Mbps, increasing to up to 500 Mbps by year end, and will look to expand the service nationwide thereafter. Latvia has an estimated 900,000 house holds and a total population of 2.3 million.

FEBRUARY 12, 2009 - ECI Telecom (search for ECI Telecom) has been selected by Lattelecom, the incumbent operator in Republic of Latvia, to build a high-speed FTTH network.

Lattelecom says it selected ECI's Hi-FOCuS Multiservice Access Node (MSAN) for its GPON capabilities to build the state-of-the-art network. ECI is collaborating with its local partner DAN Communications in this deployment as prime contractor.

ECI claims it is enabling Lattelecom to deliver a faster network with higher capacity to provide customers with triple-play capabilities, such as high-speed Internet and HD IPTV, as well as additional bandwidth-intensive services.

"Building today a network of tomorrow is an ambitious and challenging project and is a testament [to] our ongoing commitment to provide our customers with the most advanced services possible," reports Valdis Vancovics, CTO of Lattelecom. "ECI's significant experience in GPON deployment, coupled with its ability to deliver an industry-leading platform solution that will support our needs today, and well into the future, were strong considerations in our decision."

"This win is of significant importance to us as it is our maiden FTTH network deployment in the country and strategically showcases our global expertise in laying the foundation to support next-generation broadband services," adds Yoav Gazelle, vice president, EMEA North, ECI Telecom.

As part of the agreement, ECI will be providing Lattelecom with ongoing technical support and professional services together with its partner Dan Communications.

With an integrated high-bandwidth network processor, ECI's GPON offering supports any mix of access and fiber technologies to provide customers like Lattelecom with unique service-enabling intelligence, say company representatives. The platform's quality-of-service attributes, traffic prioritization properties, and advanced security capabilities, have contributed to a significant expansion of the Hi-FOCuS MSAN's customer base, with new account wins across Asia Pacific, the Former Soviet Union, and Europe.
