Alcatel-Lucent installs fast fiber Internet service to Germany's densely populated Ruhr area

FEBRUARY 4, 2010 -- Alcatel-Lucent has installed fast fiber Internet service to Germany's densely populated Ruhr area, and since last October residents of Gelsenkirchen’s residential area Wohnen am Bachlauf have had access fiber optic Internet-based telephone and TV service that reaches speeds of 100-megabit-per-second in the downstream and as fast as 10 megabits per second in the upstream, Alcatel-Lucent officials say.
The optical network is based on GPON technology, and will be used by Gelsen-Net to provide fiber-to-the-building (FTTB) connectivity. Alcatel-Lucent delivered network components, from the central office equipment to the optical modems that are installed at the end-users’ premises. Alcatel-Lucent also manages network installation, integration, and maintenance.
“The Ruhr area has one of the highest population densities in Europe," says Jürgen Katzer, vice- president sales and carrier account manager of Alcatel-Lucent in Germany. "Next-generation access networks are particularly effective in such settings, and so the Gelsen-Net GPON network is a lighthouse project for the region as a whole.
Alcatel-Lucent installed its 7342 ISAM FTTU optical access platform, its 5520 AMS access network management software, and optical modems. For more information contact Alcatel-Lucent online at www.alcatel-lucent.com.
