Fiber-optic connectivity specialists Clearfield, Inc. (NASDAQ:CLFD) has unveiled its FieldShield StrongFiber, a 900-um fiber-optic cable for in-duct outside plant (OSP) placement applications.

Clearfiled asserts that the 900-um fiber cable offers "exceptional" pull strength in a small form factor. The first fiber-optic cable of its kind, FieldShield StrongFiber also promotes faster installations and lower cost, the company adds.

"To reduce the cost of broadband deployment, we need to reduce not only the skill and time required for site installation, but also the extent of the pre-engineering required," said Matt Brigham, product marketing manager for Clearfield. "The size and strength of StrongFiber allow for the product to be deployed in any environment without concern for drop lengths chosen. Teamed with other elements of the FieldShield product line, StrongFiber can be used in most environments in place of flat drop optical cable, where conduit or microduct is being used."

The OSP drop cable is available with user-specified standard fiber-optic connectors or FieldShield Pushable Connectors; the latter are designed to enable the cable to be easily pulled through FieldShield Ruggedized Microduct. Leveraging Clearfield's spooling technology as incorporated in the company's SmartRoute Deploy Reel, drop cables of up to 300 feet are shipped on a 4.5x1-inch reel with integrated bulkhead and pre-mated adapter. Technicians can mount the fiber into their small form factor fiber management element of choice, from customer wall boxes, demarcation points, pedestals, and cabinets to SFU/MDU environments, the company says.

StrongFiber also is available as an indoor-plant cable for multiple dwelling unit (MDU) and riser deployments. The product is now shipping, alongside the other elements of the FieldShield fiber delivery system.
