Prysmian Group says it has won a pair of contracts in Singapore worth a combined S$35 million ($25.7 million) to supply fiber-optic cable to Singtel and NetLink Trust (NLT), respectively. The fiber cable will support the deployment of new fiber-optic broadband infrastructure in the country.

The Singtel Group is Singapore’s largest communications service provider. NetLink Trust (NLT) owns the fiber-optic network that provides the foundation of Singapore’s next-generation national broadband network (Next Gen NBN). The Next Gen NBN, a project under the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore’s Intelligent National 2015 masterplan, aims to create a network capable of delivering broadband data rates of 1 Gbps and more to all homes, offices and schools across Singapore.

The separate contracts call for delivery of up to 25,000 km of fiber cable combined, which will be installed in Singapore between 2016 and 2018. Prysmian will supply a variety of cable types, including underground, flame retardant, and ribbon cables with G.652D and G.657 fibers.

"Most of the broadband network in Singapore supports connection speeds up to 100 Mbps, and Singtel, NLT Network understand the importance of installing a comprehensive optical network with reliable technology as the foundation for a Next Generation National Broadband Network," said Toni Bosch, vice president, Telecom Solutions at Prysmian Group. "This will allow connections to perform 100 times faster than the speeds the country currently experiences and, with the use of optical fiber, a higher broadband speed will be delivered more efficiently and at a lower cost."
