Tyco Submarine Systems Ltd. (TSSL-- Morristown, NJ) signed a $45.5-million supply contract with flag Ltd. (Hamilton, Bermuda) to construct two extensions to the Fiber Optic Link Around the Globe (flag) undersea cable system. The extensions will connect into Aqaba, Jordan, and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. tssl will jointly supply and install the terminal equipment with kdd Submarine Cable Systems Inc. (Tokyo). Scheduled for service in June 1999, the two extensions will stretch a total of 463 km, using 2-fiber-pair cable providing 5-Gbit/sec capacity per fiber pair. The flag fiber cable system, stretching more than 27,000 km from the United Kingdom to Japan, entered commercial service in November 1997.
