Essent Kabelcom selects Corning MetroCor optical fiber for Western Europe network project
Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW), a supplier of optical fiber, and Essent Kabelcom, a cable-operator in the Netherlands, announced that Essent Kabelcom has selected Corning MetroCor optical fiber for its Western Europe network project. Corning is supplying Essent Kabelcom with more than 60,000 kilometers of MetroCor fiber for a 510-kilometer link between Amsterdam, Groningen, Bremen, and Hamburg.
Construction of the link will begin third quarter 2001, and is expected to be completed during the fourth quarter of 2001. Essent Kabelcom claims it will be the first European cable operator to deploy MetroCor fiber in Western Europe and they have selected Corning Cable Systems as the exclusive cable supplier for this project.
After consideration of available fiber technologies, Essent Kabelcom selected MetroCor fiber based on economic savings resulting from the use of cost-effective directly modulated lasers (DMLs) thus enabling the elimination of costly dispersion compensation and signal regeneration equipment. Strategic positioning of the network requires a design structure that is able to manage predicted metropolitan bandwidth demands. MetroCor fiber meets these requirements and ensures that economic savings begin upon installation and continue to accrue as bandwidth use increases.
MetroCor fiber meets the telecommunications industry's needs by enabling metropolitan networks to carry high-density data traffic while reducing complexity and network costs. Allowing for a seamless transition from standard to higher data rate applications, MetroCor fiber is compatible with single-mode fibers. By reducing the electrical regeneration and dispersion compensation required to maintain signal integrity, MetroCor fiber directly addresses the significant bandwidth growth rate that metropolitan areas and private enterprise networks are currently facing.
