Sumitomo Electric Lightwave introduces high reliability Type-37 fusion splicer line

July 18, 2001--Sumitomo Electric Lightwave, a manufacturer of fiber optic cable, fiber management systems, fusion equipment, and interconnect solutions for the telecommunications marketplace, announced its new Type-37 fusion splicer line, which serves both outside plant and factory environment applications.

Sumitomo Electric Lightwave, a manufacturer of fiber optic cable, fiber management systems, fusion equipment, and interconnect solutions for the telecommunications marketplace, announced its new Type-37 fusion splicer line, which serves both outside plant and factory environment applications.

The line includes two flag-ship products: the Type-37 Micro-Core Alignment and Micro-Core Alignment FH. The claims that the splicers have the industry's smallest footprint size of 150mm x150mm, an average splicing time of 18 seconds or less, an average splice loss of 0.02 dB, and a 75-second reinforcement sleeve heater cycle time.

The Type-37 Micro-Core and Type-37 Micro-Core FH are designed to work with virtually all fiber types for fully automatic low-loss optical fiber splices in both field and factory environments. For maximum splicing performance, each splicer uses a high-resolution direct core monitoring (HDCM) image processing software to align core fibers and to estimate splice loss. The FH product has detachable fiber holders that allow the operator to move fiber from the jacket remover to the cleaver and into the splicer without physically touching the fiber. The fiber holder feature facilitates standardization of fiber preparation, ease of use, and decreases the risk of fiber damage during the preparation stages making the FH especially suited for factory environment precision.

The Type-37 Polarization Maintaining (PM) and the Type-37 Micro-Core Alignment High Strength (HS) splicers complete the Type-37 series. Designed especially for the needs of the equipment manufacturer, the PM splicer features its own new fiber holder system and can splice polarization maintaining fiber with different coating sizes. An optional feedback system with an extinction ratio management capability is also available.

For creating high strength, low loss splices, the Type-37 HS features its own new fiber holding system that improves splice performance for factory splicing applications and helps to ensure an average splice loss of 0.02 dB for identical single-mode fibers. The monitor is located at the back of the machine allowing for optimal work flow for manufacturing applications.

The Type-37 Micro-Core Alignment, Type-37 Micro-Core Alignment FH, and Type-37 Micro-Core Alignment HS joins the existing Sumitomo "micro" line, including the Type-65 Micro-Mass and Type-45s Micro-Single splicers. Sumitomo claims to be the first company to manufacture and introduce the mass fusion splicer to the U.S.
