Corning Cable Systems signs maintenance agreement for ARCOS1

May 18, 2001--Corning Cable Systems, a manufacturer of optical cable and related hardware, announced the signing of a three-year maintenance agreement for ARCOS1, the Americas Region Caribbean Ring System.

Corning Cable Systems, a manufacturer of optical cable and related hardware, announced the signing of a three-year maintenance agreement for ARCOS1, the Americas Region Caribbean Ring System. NSW Submarine Cable Systems Inc., a Corning Cable Systems company, will lead the project.

In June 2000, Corning Cable Systems secured a submarine cable contract with a consortium led by ARCOS1 to deploy an 8,600 km fiber optic cable network. The ARCOS1 network, 85 percent owned by new World Network, will link 15 countries, starting in Miami and including the Bahamas, Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Netherlands Antilles, Nicaragua, Panama, Puerto Rico, Turks and Caicos, the United States and Venezuela.

Maintenance for ARCOS1 is scheduled to start in October 2001, and the agreement includes coverage of the complete 8,600 km wet plant of the ARCOS1 ring.

The agreement also includes the dedication of a newly contracted vessel has been specifically customized for the ARCOS1 hybrid system and is able to operate in both deep and shallow waters. The vessel, which will be stocked with hardware and spare parts, will be strategically positioned within the network and will allow a quick response time. The contract includes a supply of unrepeatered spare cable, tools and all the measuring equipment necessary on board the vessel.
