AUGUST 31, 2009 -- OFS (search Lightwave for OFS) will launch a pair of new products at this week's OSP Expo. They include the AccuRibbon DC Toneable cable and the All-Dry Mini C2 DT cable.

The AccuRibbon DC Toneable cable features a dry-core cable design and is engineered to enhance cable "locatability" and help reduce installation and operating expenses with faster and cleaner installation.

Unlike traditional outside plant fiber cables that use gels in direct contact with optical fibers, the AccuRibbon DC Toneable Cable replaces the gel inside the central tube with a super-absorbent tape that provides water blocking. The absence of gels simplifies splice preparation and lowers overall cable weight, according to OFS. The reduced cable weight enables the installation of longer cable lengths in a typical underground route.

The AccuRibbon units in this cable support the use of mass-fusion splicing. The AccuRibbon DC Toneable incorporates two copper conductors embedded in the cable's sheath that helps to reduce ongoing operational expenses by greatly increasing continuous locating distances and removing the need to place a separate cable for locating purposes.

Meanwhile, the small, lightweight the Mini C2 DT cable targets the smaller fiber counts needed in today's networks' last optical link.

"The OFS Mini C2 DT cable's innovative design offers a compact, yet durable fiber cable solution, with two steel strength rods in a completely dry design that is easy to handle and install," said William Kloss, executive vice president of marketing & sales, North America & CALA. "The core of this cable contains no messy filling compounds, virtually eliminating the need for cleaning chemicals and wipes, enabling faster and cleaner outside plant service (OSP) installation with nearly effortless splice preparation."

The Mini C2 DT cable's totally dry construction also creates a more compact, lighter cable that is easier to handle and install, thereby offering savings opportunities in transportation and shipping costs says OFS. By helping to reduce chemical cleaning supplies and shipping costs, the cable offers a more cost-effective, eco-friendly alternative to present options, the company adds.

The Mini C2 DT cable is designed for underground conduit, direct burial, and aerial/lashed applications.
