DELTA Fiber to deploy XGS-PON across Dutch FTTP network

The service provider says that the 10G PON technology will become standard for all FTTP deployments by this September, with an eye toward offering 10-Gbps services next year.

DELTA Fiber of the Netherlands says it plans to deploy XGS-PON across its fiber to the premises (FTTP) network. The service provider says that the 10G PON technology will become standard for all FTTP deployments by this September, with an eye toward offering 10-Gbps services next year.

Nokia will supply the XGS-PON technology, which DELTA says it will deploy first in Kapelle in Zeeland this month. To ensure the availability of the full 10 Gbps, each premises will receive its own fiber from the local exchange. Prices for a 10-Gbps services will be announced later this year. DELTA adds that it plans to roll out WiFi 6.0 at the same time as XGS-PON.

“With this latest technology, our customers can benefit from the highest internet speeds in the Netherlands,” stated John Wittekamp, CTO of DELTA Fiber. “Data traffic increases by about 40% every year. We are now going to work on speeds of up to 10 Gbps. With this upgrade, our network is also prepared for speeds of up to 25 Gbps. In this way we can continue to grow with the needs of our customers in the future.”

DELTA Fiber says its current FTTP network passes approximately 850,000 homes and businesses in the Netherlands. The company plans to increase that total to 1 million by the end of 2021.
