OF Networks (OFN), an OKI group company, says it has supplied GE-PON systems for the deployment of an optical LAN in Tanah Datar, West Sumatra, Indonesia. Performed with the cooperation of the local Telecommunication Technology Committee (TTC), this is the first optical LAN deployment using GE-PON by a municipality in Indonesia, Oki says.

The optical LAN will support delivery of 1-Gbps services in rural areas as well as improve the Tanah Datar prefectural government’s work environment.

Indonesia’s federal and various municipal governments have embarked on programs to improve ICT capabilities to bridge the digital divide between cities and rural areas. The Tanah Datar prefectural government focused not only equal information access but also improving administrative procedures within the government.

In 2009, TTC and OFN, in cooperation with the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, began work on the Tanah Datar optical LAN. Network trails tested not only broadband service delivery, but the delivery of business documents between the office buildings and document management. The trials helped to improve the municipality’s financial information system (known as SIMDA).
