7 March 4 2003 -- Redback Networks, Rotterdam, has announced that UK ISP Eclipse has selected the Redback SMS 10000 platform of subscriber management systems to launch its new national DSL service.

Eclipse is initially offering DSL access service for business and residential customers, using BT's wholesale services. The SMS platform will terminate, authenticate and provision DSL subscriber traffic delivered from BT's broadband network.

Eclipse plans to leverage the extensive and unique service insertion capabilities of the SMS platform to deliver a suite of advanced IP services as the service rolls out.

The SMS 10000 platform provides Eclipse with the flexibility and scalability needed to maintain quality of service, reduce the cost of subscriber acquisition, and provisioning as its broadband subscriber base grows.

Eclipse is planning to add over 10,000 new broadband subscribers over the next six months. The SMS 10000 platform has a unique set of features such as a circuit-based architecture and virtual contexts which when coupled with the scalability and performance of the platform, will enable Eclipse to differentiate its services to a variety of different users.

"From the outset, Eclipse's objective has been to create a value-for-money, high quality DSL service for our existing customer base. We also wanted to attract new subscribers, knowing that there is huge demand for reliable broadband services in the U.K.," explained Mark Lang, managing director at Eclipse.

"To achieve these objectives we needed to identify a technology solution that would provide a flexible and scalable platform for broadband access and compelling value added services. It also had to interface seamlessly with BT's network and easily be deployed, managed and supported within Eclipse's existing network infrastructure. Redback has met all our technical, commercial and management demands with a single box solution."

Marco Wanders, Redback's vice president of operations for Europe, Middle East & Africa said: "Eclipse's deployment of the SMS platform enables them to launch high quality, reliable services and to plan for projected growth and service diversification without adding excessive capital and operational costs. Redback is playing a fundamental role in enabling 'Broadband Britain'."
