XKL seeks entry into fiber-optic broadband access network market

Enterprise-focused optical transport systems vendor XKL LLC says it plans to apply its expertise to the fiber-optic broadband access network market. The company says it believes its technology will prove particularly appealing to rural, underserved, and low-income areas looking to connect schools and municipalities to high-speed Internet.

Enterprise-focused optical transport systems vendor XKL LLC says it plans to apply its expertise to the fiber-optic broadband access network market. The company says it believes its technology will prove particularly appealing to rural, underserved, and low-income areas looking to connect schools and municipalities to high-speed Internet.

XKL markets a variety of 1RU systems within its DarkStar portfolio to enable low cost, easy to deploy optical transport for enterprise and data center interconnect applications (see, for example, "XKL offers DarkStar DST10-10 Optical Capacity Extender"). In light of the creation of the Obama Administration's ConnectALL broadband deployment program and the funding expected to be provided to support it, XKL believes the time is right to expand its activities.

The company's current products should be applicable to point-to-point broadband access architectures as well as middle mile applications. Asked via XKL's hired media relations firm whether the company had plans to develop systems specifically for broadband access, XKL responded, "Because of Len Bosack's vision and how XKL products are engineered (with low power usage, low latency, a 1RU form factor), solutions can be managed and operated by any router technician. Plus, our products have 6+ years and counting of 100% uptime with no errors/downtime and with no licensing fees or coded lasers. For those reasons, we believe XKL products are uniquely suited to serve the rural areas of the country."

"Founder and CEO Len Bosack engineered XKL products with the future in mind," stated Chad Lamb, director of engineering for XKL, in a company press release. "Every network begins at Layer 1, and XKL appliances have the capacity to achieve 10 years of uptime without having to take the system offline. Solutions that are built to last, plus a strategic pay-as-you-grow bandwidth solution, makes XKL products optimal for any organization, especially those without connectivity experience and with limited IT resources."
