OCTOBER 19, 2009 – Alloptic has announced availability of its 802.3av-compliant 10G EPON offering. The 10G-EPON technology, which is available for controlled introduction, is supported from Alloptic’s edge10 optical line terminal (OLT).

IEEE 802.3av builds upon the IEEE standard 802.3ah, allowing seamless upgrades via the simultaneous operation of 1-Gbps and 10-Gbps symmetric and asymmetric EPON systems on the same outside plant. This enables service providers to introduce 10G-based services without replacing existing 1G-EPON customer equipment, thereby minimizing the operational impact of upgrading a large, in-service FTTH network. The recently ratified 802.3av standard exceeds other standardized PON technologies with its 10-Gbps throughput.

“One of the more interesting aspects of Alloptic’s 10G-EPON introduction is our ‘virtual PON’ concept,” says Shane Eleniak, executive vice president of marketing and business development at Alloptic. “A 10G virtual PON allows network operators to deploy a single 10G PON’s bandwidth across multiple 1G PONs, lowering costs while providing 10G services whenever and wherever needed….Providers can now extend multi-GigE services to their larger commercial subscribers on the same PON infrastructure as their lower speed voice, data, and video services for both residential and small business customers.”

“Building on its DOCSIS-enabled edge10 OLT, Alloptic’s 10G EPON and 10G PON virtualization introduces a robust solution for MSOs,” says Jeff Heynen, directing analyst, broadband and video at Infonetics Research. “They can deploy 1G or 10G services as needed from a common system on a common fiber infrastructure, defray the costs of 10G services across multiple PONs, and manage the network with their existing back office systems. This solution addresses key concerns for network operators well into the future.”

The Alloptic 10G EPON offering is currently available for trial.
