OCTOBER 4, 2006 -- Korea's Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) announced the first 10-Gbit/sec TDMA PON platform. The research institute believes that 10G TDMA PON can be applied effectively for FTTH and wireless backhaul applications and can convey IPTV broadcasting services and new types of personal unicasting services, among other emerging offerings.

ETRI says 10G TDMA PON is particularly suitable for broadcasting IPTV, including expanded high-definition TV (HDTV), "without painful channel zapping."

ETRI's 10G TDMA PON supports an asymmetric PHY architecture with data rates of 10 Gbits/sec downstream and 1.25 Gbits/sec upstream. ETRI foresees fully symmetric 10G TDMA PONs in the future. The 10G downstream signal will support triple play services without using complex protocols such as IGMP out of the household, ETRI asserts. The 10G TDMA PON equipment incorporates features adopted from IEEE 802.3ah and ITU-T G.984 to ease implementation and interoperability.

"If service providers want to strengthen their competitiveness, they should prepare a new type of high-speed access network that can transmit whole broadcast channels, increased Internet data, and voice traffic with one single medium to combine them with a single bill. The ETRI's 10G TDMA PON is the very technology to support it. We believe that our product will give both telcos and cable operators a great opportunity to increase their revenues," said Dr. Kyung-Pyo Jun, ETRI's vice president.

ETRI plans to apply their 10G TDMA PON system to the FTTH field trial in Gwangju, Korea, in 2008. In this field trial, the largest in Korea, FTTH infrastructure will be built for 20,000 households by 2009. ETRI will deliver such near-future FTTH services as IPTV broadcasting; rich video on demand, EoD, and gaming on demand services; video telephony; multi-angle video streaming; digital cinema; and interactive e-learning, etc. Systems and services verified in this FTTH field trial can be spread to Korea's broadband marketplace.
