Actiontec to release GPON ONTs

JANUARY 9, 2007 -- The addition of ONTs to Actiontec's product line is part of a larger strategy that will enable service providers to significantly reduce the cost of CPE installations in GPON environments, say company representatives.

JANUARY 9, 2007 -- Actiontec Electronics has announced the upcoming release of optical network terminals (ONTs) designed to support GPON fiber deployments to the home. Scheduled to ship in the second half of 2007, the devices complement Actiontec's existing line of consumer premises equipment. The company claims it is now able to supply equipment for every IPTV delivery scenario from ADSL2+ to fiber-to-the-curb/VDSL-to-the-home to GPON-based networks running all the way to the subscriber's door.

The addition of ONTs to Actiontec's product line is part of a larger strategy that will enable service providers to significantly reduce the cost of CPE installations in GPON environments, say company representatives. Actiontec's strategy will be unveiled later this year.

The new ONTs will leverage the next-generation GPON standard for passive optical networks (PONs), including the higher bandwidth and bandwidth efficiency over earlier protocols. A GPON network delivers up to 2,488 Mbits/sec of downstream bandwidth and 1,244 Mbits/sec of upstream bandwidth versus throughput of 622/155 Mbits/sec for the earlier BPON standard. GPON's method of packaging data also allows for higher quality of service for delay-sensitive traffic such as voice and video communications.

The ONTs will complement Actiontec's portfolio of IPTV-capable routers and gateways. The company now offers ADSL+, ADSL2+ bonded, VDSL, and fiber gateways that can manage traffic loads ranging from 24 Mbits/sec to 100 Mbits/sec, support legacy telco delivery mechanisms as well as new infrastructure, and provide room-to-room content distribution with a choice of MoCA, HomePlug AV or HPNA3.1 networking, in addition to EthernetEand WiFi connectivity. Actiontec says it is the first vendor with CPE equipment that supports every major WAN and LAN distribution standard.
