Nokia, Ooredoo Qatar trial TWDM-PON

Jan. 3, 2017
Nokia and Ooredoo Qatar report they have tested the former's Time and Wavelength Division Multiplexing Passive Optical Network (TWDM-PON) technology over the latter's fiber-optic network in Doha. The trial saw the collaborators support 40-Gbps download and upload rates via TWDM-PON.

TWDM-PON is the foundational technology for NG-PON2. Nokia and Ooredoo Qatar overlayed the technology on the service provider's existing network to support four wavelengths of 10 Gbps each.

The trial demonstrates that Ooredoo Qatar can upgrade its existing GPON infrastructure to a single symmetrical 10-Gbps transmission via XGS-PON or multiple such transmissions via NG-PON2 over a single fiber.

"Every single step we take is to support the Qatar National Vision 2030, which aims to boost the knowledge-based economy," says Waleed Al Sayed, CEO of Ooredoo Qatar. "Through the current successful trial with Nokia's NG-PON technology we are evolving toward deploying 40 Gbps speeds to provide a significantly enhanced broadband experience for individual subscribers and launching new, high-bandwidth services demanded by enterprise customers. It's yet another step for us in the direction of enabling IoT, smart home, and smart city services in the country."

Nokia recently completed a similar NG-PON2 trial with du in the United Arab Emirates (see "UAE's du tests TWDM-PON"). The systems house also recently collaborated with Ooredoo's Algerian arm on a test of 1-Tbps technology (see "Nokia, Ooredoo Algeria trial 1-Tbps optical transmission").
