Calix, Inc. (NYSE:CALX) said that SKY Cable Corp. of the Philippines will use its AXOS E3-2 Intelligent PON Node to move the cable operator's network upgrade to fiber. SKY Cable has selected the AXOS E3-2 Intelligent PON Node to transition smoothly from their traditional cable plant to software-defined networking (SDN).
SKY Cable chose the AXOS E3-2 Intelligent PON Node to support its plans for serving the greater metropolitan areas of Manila and Rizal, along with the Cavite and Laguna regions, says Calix. Additionally, SKY Cable will deploy the AXOS DPx Connector software platform (see "Calix AXOS DPx Connector links access network SDN to existing DOCSIS environments" on Lightwave's sister site Broadband Technology Report). SKY Cable will also deploy Calix Wi-Fi enabled GigaHubs through the Calix Channel Partner Twoway Communications (ACI Communications) at subscribers' homes and businesses.
Calix unveiled its AXOS E3-2 Intelligent PON Node in 2016 to enable distributed access network architectures by moving the OLT, routing, and IP policy and accounting functions from the headend or central office into the network toward the subscriber (see "Calix AXOS E3-2 Intelligent PON Node supports distributed access network architectures"). The company added 10G EPON capabilities to the AXOS E3-2 Intelligent PON Node in June 2017 to make the eSeries platforms more appealing to cable operators (see "Calix adds 10G EPON capabilities to AXOS eSeries FTTH systems").
According to Calix, AXOS E3-2 Intelligent PON Nodes offers SKY Cable deployment flexibility, providing services to subscribers in advanced timeframes through its ability to be mounted anywhere. SKY Cable's fiber-optic network will also be built end-to-end on Calix AXOS to offer always-on capabilities, remove maintenance window needs, and deliver an affordable method to turnto an SDN without affecting operations and workflows, according to the FTTx technology provider.
"Cable operators globally are increasingly seeing the benefits of fiber but are struggling with how to make the transition from traditional hybrid-fiber-coax (HFC) networks to FTTH networks," said Michael Weening, Calix executive vice president of sales and marketing. "PON solutions must do so much more than simple back office integration. With Calix AXOS solutions now in place, SKY Cable can accelerate the quantity and quality of new services and applications delivered to their subscribers. Through fast and simple software integration and systems installation as well as a clear path to emerging SDN architectures, AXOS provides the advantage SKY Cable needs to lead in their market – and be ready to rapidly embrace new technologies and services in the future regardless of the PHY."
