The People?s Republic of China has launched construction of a fiber-optic network covering 2754 km across the

Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The system will link the Gansu Province capital of Lanzhou with Xining, of Qinchai Province, and Lhasa, of the Tibet Autonomous Region. The $73.5 million network should be operational by December 1998.
