Harmonic Lightwaves Inc., Sunnyvale, CA, plans to expand the scope of its fiber-optic systems for broadband digital communications in 1997. According to Tony Ley, president and chief executive, "The company plans to invest about one-third of its research and development budget to develop digital systems." To that end, Harmonic is expanding its Haifa, Israel-based digital research arm. Digital headend-type products are expected in the second half of the year.
