MCI Corp., Washington, DC, has completed a $60 million investment to quadruple its Internet backbone, boosting the company`s transmission speeds from 155 to 622 Mbits/sec (see Lightwave, September 1996, page 1). Approximately 13,000 ports were added to accommodate demand for Internet service from consumers and businesses. MCI officials say its Internet traffic is increasing by nearly 30% per month, and the company plans to double its overall backbone capacity this year.
