mci of Washington, DC, has unveiled a new Synchronous Optical Network-based data service that combines its long-distance network and its local facilities in 22 metropolitan areas. The new service, which mci is calling a nationwide first, will enable businesses to exchange information at high speeds from location to location, without any intermediary such as the incumbent local exchange carrier. The company`s Sonet technology, called network mci Broadband Connections, has speeds from 45 to 155 Mbits/sec. The service connects directly into the long-distance network to customers` locations via mci`s local metro fiber facilities.
