General Communications Inc. of Anchorage, AK, has completed its first residential local telephone

General Communications Inc. of Anchorage, AK, has completed its first residential local telephone call in Anchorage and plans to offer local service to the entire Anchorage area by year-end. The company provides local and long-distance telephone, cable TV, and data-communications services to more than 100,000 customers throughout the state, and is investing more than $30 million in telecommunications services in the Anchorage area. It is also building a $115 million fiber-optic cable network called Alaska United to link Alaska`s major cities. The 2331-mi cable will connect Anchorage and Juneau with Seattle, WA, via an undersea route, while undersea and terrestrial connections will extend the cable to Fairbanks in central Alaska via Whittier and Valdez.
