A University of Glasgow research team in Scotland plans to build all-optical photonic chips capable of transmitting signals at rates to 20 Gbits/sec. The optical system modulates a continuous laser with another laser to shape each light pulse, integrating the two using a "quantum-well intermixing" technique.
