Level 3 Communications Inc. recently announced it has completed the expansion of its network into seven new European markets. The previously announced expansion enables Level 3 to meet demand from new and existing customers in the European cities of Geneva, Zurich, Madrid, Milan, Stockholm, Karlsruhe, and Koln.
"The completion of this expansion significantly increases our European footprint, enabling us to offer transport and IP services in 16 of the top markets on the continent," contends Brady Rafuse, president of Level 3 in Europe. "We already have customers in place in six of the new cities and expect to serve a growing number of carriers, ISPs, and other communications companies in all seven of the new markets."
Level 3's existing two-ring network in Europe spans 3,600 miles and connects multi-conduit metropolitan networks in London, Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris, Frankfurt, Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Munich, and Berlin. In North America, Level 3's network stretches 15,889 inter-city miles with metropolitan area networks in 27 cities.
ONTAP, Level 3's proprietary Web-based customer network management and service provisioning system, will be extended to cover the new markets. Among other capabilities, ONTAP enables delivery of wavelength and private line services when customers require them, rather than in the weeks or months that it typically takes other carriers to deliver transport services, claim company representatives.
This allows customers to tie their network purchases directly to revenue opportunities, rather than expending capital based on speculative long-term projections. ONTAP also enables customers to check Level 3's capacity inventory and prices, reserve capacity, order circuits, and manage their network, all via a Web-based interface.
