22 May 2002 -- Innovance Networks has launched what it calls "the world's first complete agile, photonic networking solution for long-haul, inter-city networks".
The AgileCore suite is intended to help service providers cut costs while migrating to next-generation networks. "The range brings together transparent switching, dynamic transport, and full spectrum tunable technology with a real-time photonic layer operating system," Innovance claims. "The suite provides up to 70% reduction in capital and operational costs."
Peter Allen, president and CEO says,"Service Providers face increasing price and service delivery expectations, together with the need to deliver improved profits and free cash flow from network operations. AgileCore is an open, modular platform that can be scaled in-service to a full agile, photonic network."
Component elements include: a Transparent Photonic Switch (TPX 1000) to enable the per-wavelength management of traffic through the node and eliminate the need for electrical to optical conversions; the Dynamic Line System (DLS 1000), which provides the network reach and point-to any-point connection set up capability; and the Tunable Photonic Gateway (TPG 1000) to eliminate the complexity associated with wavelength planning and engineering in today's networks and to enable dynamic connection activation.
Rick Schafer, telecom equipment research analyst at CIBC World Markets, commented, "Current capital spending plans amongst service providers increases the barrier for new technology adoption but threatens a stepwise decline towards network obsolescence. Focusing on reducing total network costs and enhancing service provisioning speed is exactly what the industry needs."
