FIBER IN THE NEWS:Winstar runs traffic from NY to DC over Lucent 80-channel system

3/24/00 Lucent Technologies (Murray Hill, NJ) announced that Winstar Communications Inc. (New York, NY) is using Lucent's 80-channel optical networking system, the WaveStar OLS 400G, to dramatically increase the capacity on the New York-to-Washington, DC, leg of Winstar's broadband network. Winstar is the first company in North America to announce live network traffic running across Lucent's flagship system.

(New York, NY) is using Lucent's 80-channel optical networking system, the WaveStar OLS 400G, to dramatically increase the capacity on the New York-to-Washington, DC, leg of Winstar's broadband network. Winstar is the first company in North America to announce live network traffic running across Lucent's flagship system.

Winstar is using the Lucent equipment system to transmit voice and data traffic over a two-fiber network ring connecting the two cities. The WaveStar OLS 400G uses a technology dense wavelength-division multiplexing to expand network capacity.

Lucent's system currently is in service or in trials with more than 40 customers globally.
